Philip speaking at IUMRS in Perth

Philip will be giving a talk at the 20th International Union of Materials Research Societies conference which will take place in Perth, Western Australia from 22 to 26 September 2019. Philip's talk relates to the measurement of electronic structure and bonding around nano-voids in aluminium.

Christmas Party 2018

In December 2018, Philip hosted the annual Christmas BBQ for his colleagues and students, and their families. It was a festive occasion marking the end of another busy and productive year.  Two guests at the party had recently submitted their PhD theses (hurray!), one was heading to Belgium to start a new post-doc position, job offers were in the pipeline, and everyone was looking forward to a holiday. There was lots to discuss and celebrate!

Philip on the radio

Philip was a guest on 3MDR radio during Science Week and talked with host Jules Vines on the 'Classically Saturday' show.  They had a great discussion about Philip's work and interests, including the surprising properties of aluminium and its alloys, developments in machine learning, and Philip's journey into science at Monash University.  Listen to Philip's radio interview here:

Sagamore 2018, Halifax, Canada

Philip travelled to Halifax, Canada, in July this year to participate in Sagamore 2018, the conference of the International Union of Crystallography's Commission of Quantum Crystallography.  Philip gave a talk that explored the nexus between quantum and electron crystallography. This year the conference included delegates from 27 different countries and was a fabulous opportunity to share ideas with international colleagues. Crystallography in Sicily

Philip has recently returned from the ancient hill-top town of Erice in Sicily where he gave lectures and held workshops at the International School of Quantum Crystallography and the International School of Electron Crystallography.   The Schools brought together international experts and students to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments in the field.  Erice, which dates back 3000 years, provided a wonderful location to meet and discuss cutting edge science. ...

End of year party!

As the sun set on another busy year, the group gathered at Philip's place to celebrate Christmas and the summer break.  This year, there was a special appearance by Dr Victor Streltsov, one of Philip's PhD supervisors from UWA.  Victor is 'PhD grandfather' to Philip's students!  Sausages were sizzled, salads were shared and many delicious desserts were laid out for the feast.  Thanks to everyone who contributed food for the party!

Group News

Neil Street joins our group from the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) of the Australian Government.  He will be conducting research into the high frequency magnetic properties of hexagonal ferrites for use in electromagnetic wave absorbers.  Neil commenced his PhD at the end of September and is supervised by Prof. Kiyonori Suzuki and A/Prof. Philip Nakashima.  Welcome Neil!
